53% of Spanish consumers believe that biometrics is more secure than passwords
With the arrival of the busiest shopping seasons of the year, security is a priority for consumers when making their purchases. According to a recent study by Visa1, almost half of Spaniards (47%) feel safer using biometrics to protect their information and data compared to traditional methods. In fact, more than a third (36%) of respondents plan to adopt biometric payment solutions in the next 5 years.
The main reasons why consumers still do not use biometrics for payments and online authentications include a preference for the username and password method (42%), the desire not to share additional information (35%), the perception of lack of security (27%), reliability (24%), or a preference for physical identifications (20%). However, more than half (53%) agree that biometric authentication is more secure than passwords. Additionally, 52% believe that biometrics will have a positive impact on society and can help reduce fraud.
"Security is increasingly important to ensure a good shopping experience. In this context, biometrics is transforming the way we pay: it not only simplifies the payment experience but also provides an additional layer of protection, especially important during major shopping events like Black Friday or Christmas," says Eduardo Prieto, Country Manager, Visa Spain. "Biometrics offers a solution that balances convenience and security, allowing consumers to shop with confidence while protecting their transactions from fraud," he concludes.
In a world where digital security is increasingly important, especially during busy shopping seasons, biometrics presents itself as an effective tool to secure transactions and protect consumers' financial information. Spanish banks have more than 40 use cases where it is necessary to verify the identity of customers through biometrics, as one of the safest measures against fraud prevention.
More than half (54%) of consumers are willing to replace their physical ID with a digital ID that better protects their personal information, and 49% would feel safer using biometrics through a digital identification. As well as this, 45% would be open to replacing everyday items with biometric devices (car keys, house keys, passport, etc.)
Biometrics not only offers greater security but also provides convenience in various environments. Spanish consumers have identified airports (55%), hotels (53%), concerts (32%), football stadiums (29%), and nightclubs (19%) as the main places where they would be willing to use digital identification.
