Surpassing the 100 million token mark in France
Visa has announced a major milestone in its commitment to the security of digital payments in France by surpassing the 100 million token issued mark in 2024. This achievement is an illustration of the confidence of French banks and businesses in the secure payment solutions offered by Visa.
Tokenisation replaces sensitive payment card information with unique digital identifiers or tokens, providing an additional layer of security against fraud.
"Reaching this threshold of 100 million tokens issued in France is a strong illustration of the efficiency and security of our tokenisation technology," said Romain Boisson, France Country Manager, Visa. "We are determined to continue to innovate and offer secure payment solutions to French banks, businesses and businesses as well as consumers in the months and years to come." Tokens can be used for online payments, mobile payments, and digital wallet services, among others.
Tokens are also at the heart of "Click to Pay", the new payment standard that is expected to be deployed across France in the coming months. This solution will improve the user experience whilst also strengthening the security of transactions.
Earlier this year, Visa announced it had issued its 10 billionth token worldwide, generating $40 billion USD in incremental e-commerce globally1. Currently, 29% of all transactions processed by Visa use tokens2, reflecting their widespread adoption and the trust consumers place in this secure payment method.
